Info on Chondroflex
Chondro flex is one of many joint supplement products that are made to deal with feline arthritis and as well as canine arthritis. It contains glucosamine and chondroitin, along with MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane. These are all recognized to help in dealing with arthritis in dogs and cats. It's also got some other random nutrients, but these three are the big ones that have actually been tested and proven effective.
How does it work?
The three supplemental ingredients work against arthritis in the following ways:
Glucosamine - Glucosamine is a sugar, and it helps the body form and repair cartilage. It naturally occurs in dogs and cats and is necessary for their bodies to function properly - arthritis supplements basically make sure the pet has enough to deal with arthritis on its own.
Chondroitin - Chondroitin is a protein that makes cartilage more elastic. It also is found naturally in pet's bodies, as with glucosamine.
MSM - MSM is an anti-inflammatory, and it's basically along the lines of aspirin. I'm not sure how effective it really is - in people at least, it is often hyped as a cure-all, but a lot of doctors don't think it is that effective. The idea is that it reduces the inflammation that is often the cause of the pain in arthritis.
Are there any side effects?
I've been unable to find any discussed anywhere, other than indigestion caused by the pet's stomach disagreeing with the chewables. For most arthritis supplements there can't be any side effects because they are functionally the same as vitamins - you're just giving the pet's body stuff it uses anyone. The only word of caution is that MSM does have side effects in extremely high doses - so basically just don't let your pet eat a bottle of these. I would also add that in people there have been reports of problems for people who have seafood allergies. I haven't ever heard of a cat having that - but Glucosamine often comes from shellfish.
